James,
Happy Birthday a day early!! I hope you have a great day off (after you finish making Sherry throw-up) and enjoy every minute of it! I wanted to say thanks for doing what you do so well. I would have never thought I was, at 49 years old, able to get back into a strenuous workout and see great results the way I have. Even though I have more work to do, I could not have a better trainer!! Your professionalism, knowledge, experience and energy put the "personal" into personal training. Thanks for the hard work you put into getting me to work hard. It's a pleasure being part of the Woodall's Fitness Training empire! After driving past your business so many times, "accepting" that it would just be too hard and too late, I'm glad I finally pulled in the parking lot and walked in.

BARBIE TEW: Which people most influence you?

BARBIE TEW 29.APR.09

Original Article in Clayton News-Star

Life has been a whirlwind for me lately. I have a tendency to overbook, but this was a particularly impressive example of ignoring the time continuum and forgetting there are only 24 hours in a day.

In the past two weeks, I have hosted the first Mothers Unlimited Neuse Thunderstix Lacrosse Clinic, went on a trip for spring break to D.C. and NYC, hosted a Bunco Charity Night, had a booth at Strawberry Fest and unveiled our first “Sneakers to Stilettos” edition of the year. To say the past two weeks have been a blur would be an understatement. But when looking back, I am glowing because all of these events were a huge success, and Monday I had a moment to reflect.

If you have ever been in charge of an event, be it for work or a group, a club or anything where you ran the show and needed to count on people to hold up their responsibilities, you know that there are some whom you can always rely on and there are some you just can’t. Oftentimes, those who volunteer really mean well, but in the end there is always some reason why they cannot step up to the plate.

We had our first lacrosse clinic, and we had the leaders of the N.C. Lacrosse Academy come with six of their players to run the event. They came through and were so professional and gracious it was a joy for everyone. We can’t wait to have them back in June for our next clinic.

The Mothers Unlimited Bunco night was great. We raised money for our charities. and everyone had so much fun, but there are a few people who raise the bar. There are people in my life who are my go-to people. These amazing individuals are my husband, Susan and Glen Massengill, Paul and Cheryl Bomar, Karyn and Chad Barefoot, Julie and Ken Stewart, Tara Marley, Tina Bolick and James Woodall.

These people are always just there. They know when we are down to the wire and everyone has to raise their game. I don’t know what I would do without them in my life. I am always amazed at their willingness to help others. There is no expectation of reciprocation. There is no complaining or slacking off – they are just there. My life would not be nearly as good without them.

I made a commitment to myself this year. This is my year of reclamation. I have committed to regaining my body after too many years of being too heavy. I have committed to growing my business while constantly striving to find the right harmony and balance of family life. But, I also realize I must be vigilant about coveting my time and dedicating time to those who are most important to me.

So often we find people in our life I call energy drainers. You know these people. They are always finding excuses as to why something can’t work. They are the chronic complainers and never follow through. They are always tired, and we feel tired after being with them because they bring us down and reduce our ability to reach our full potential. I have committed to minimizing my daily time with people like this.

I learned at a convention that we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with. I did not really give that too much thought until Monday when I reflected on the past two weeks. I will admit, there are a few people in my life who I have allowed too much power to drain my energy. I am committing to shedding that excess weight, as well.

But I am blessed to have more than five amazing people I spend a ton of time with and those I listed above are all quality, wonderful individuals whom I am lucky to be surrounded by. They lift me up and help me believe I can do most anything. I am committed to doing the same for them.

Who are your five people? An even better question, who are your children’s five people? Are you surrounding yourself with amazing people like James, Susan and Karyn, or do you allow people to pull you down and reduce your potential?

It is my year of reclamation. I am looking better, feeling stronger, doing more, enjoying my life and loving this ride. But you can be sure it is not only my body that will be lighter this year. I will try not to sweat the small stuff. I will avoid complainers and those with the chronic habit of excuse making. I am out of time for energy zappers. And I am going to try to remember to breathe.

Occasionally, since I've been working out, I have some aches and pains now and then. Luckily I have James' knowledge of Z-Health to help me out. Just the other day I was having trouble with my right knee. After a few Z-Health maneuvers I felt much better and was able to bend and squat without pain. I also notice more flexibility and better range of motion after warming up with Z-Health. My job requires allot of sitting and typing so I have incorporated some of the Z-Health moves when I need to get up and take a break.

Thanks for all your help James, you're a great coach!

Hi James,

I want to tell you about my experience going to a local health club for the first time, after training with you for over a year.

First, there is a huge difference in what they call “personal training” and personal training by James. Their typical “personal training” session goes something like this:

  1. They set up the machines and weight
  2. You lift the weight 5 or 6 times
  3. They say ”does that weight feel ok” and make any adjustments; then…next machine. They do NOT encourage you to do 3 sets of 15 and adjust as needed.

That sounds ok, except that there is a big difference in the amount of weight that a person can manage for 5 or 6 reps and what they can manage for 3 sets of 15 reps. If a person is new to working out, they don’t question what the “personal trainer” told them to do. They just get discouraged when they try to do it on their own and can’t. Duh! No wonder most people give up at a typical health club.

Second, they really don’t seem to like customization. It was really hard to convince them to deviate from their normal “here’s what we do on the first visit”. Even after I explained that I had been working out with a personal training for over a year, the guy that I was working with would not listen to me. I guess he thought I meant “personal trainer”, not training by James. I got finally got through to him when we came to the leg press, which is exactly like the one at your gym. I told him, “I lift 270 lbs on this”. He looked at me and said ok, let’s try 100 on this machine. I wish you could have seen his face when I moved it to 270 and lifted it like it was nothin’. LOL From that point on, he started listening to me. (before you say anything, yes, I know, I will increase the weight since it’s so easy :) )

I am still going to this fitness center, but I will continue to train with you to keep me challenged in my fitness program. Training with you has given me the confidence and knowledge to take responsibility for my own personal fitness! I could not have done that without your encouragement and support. Thanks for being a great trainer and even better friend.

Thank you!

Susan Sykes

A quick jog on the beach helps your cardiovascular system"Prior to training with James, I had great difficulty achieving any significant weight/inch loss. In fact, I had been at a standstill in my fitness efforts for at least six months! But through an intensive and individualized cardio and strength training program designed by James, I have seen impressive results in three short months."

"I am certainly motivated to continue my training routine with Woodall's Fitness Training. Not only to achieve my fitness goals, but to maintain a healthy lifestyle. With James' expertise and personal encouragement, I am the healthy person I've always strived to be."

Dear James:

Thank you for working with our son, Trenton. The results of the initial three months training period are in and the improvements are impressive. We asked that you design and manage a training regimen for Trenton (a fifteen-year-old) that would address his strength, endurance, speed, and total body agility. We could not be more pleased with Trenton's progress. We have observed the following measureable improvements:
  1. Trenton's speed over 60 yards has improved by more than one second;
  2. Trenton's baseball hitting distance has increased by 20 to 30 feet and he is hitting with more power to the gaps in the outfield;
  3. Trenton can now maintain year-round the stamina and endurance that he needs to wrestle and play football;
  4. Trenton's improved mobility and flexibility as a catcher have significantly improved.
Improving sports performance in games such as baseball are among the services provided by Woodall's Fitness TrainingProbably just as important as these improvements, is the new attitude that Trenton has adopted toward a workout program. Your varied approach to exercise routines and new activities (boxing, ring workouts, biking and Bowflex) have created an enjoyable workout period which defeats the boredom of working out by himself for Trenton. Finally, the fact that you come to our home for the workouts surely beats transporting a teenager to a gym or fitness center for regular exercise programs.

Again, thank you for the first three months of work with our son. We look forward to continuing these programs throughout the school year and into next year.

Cordially,
